Apple's VR set is actually cheap. That's why mainstream media is wrong.
Apple announced that its VR, sorry, I meant spatial computing headset (category creation. nice.) is set to cost $3,499.
(Or “thirty-four, ninety-nine,” as Tim likes to frame it).
And immediately, there was a lot of backlash for such a price. In comparison, Meta’s Quest 3 costs $499
But here’s the thing. Unlike all the other VR devices, this device isn’t for gaming.
It’s a b2b product. Not b2c product.
And you can charge a lot more for a b2b product.
Not to mention, it’s created for early adopters. Who won’t mind paying such a price(especially if they can use the company credit card)
It’s for designers and engineers in fancy NYC and Silicon Valley studios and tech companies.
So they can play around with it and create an ecosystem around the set.
Tim Cook himself said, “We can’t wait to release it for developers, so they can begin to work on applications for it.”
And after this crazy bunch has built the mandatory part of every app store – fart, beer, and lighter apps – they’ll make stuff for other professionals.
For architects, civil engineers, video editors, etc., who would otherwise sit behind a 49-inch screen or rage tab switch their laptop screen while sitting at a cafe.
But who now can benefit from this compact device that helps them set up their control room wherever they are. In a never before seen immersive way.
In 2008, the App Store gold rush began. Now, the VR App Store gold rush has begun.
Regarding the price. In a more bean-counting manner.
The original Macintosh in 1984 cost $2,495. Or over $7,000 today.
So the Apple Vision Pro is half the price for technology that’s at least as big of a leap forward.
Or in 2019, Samsung launched its first folding phone costing $1,980. Half of Vision Pro.
That phone was also a technological breakthrough, but not at this scale.
It was still a phone. Or a tablet. Or a phone.
And it’s Samsung…
But the things Apple’s VR headset can do is unbelievable. It’s tomorrow's engineering. Today.
There’s nothing like this out there.
And let’s not forget. It’s a computer.
This headset has the computational and rendering power of an entire M2 MacBook built into it. But in a totally new form.
The most expensive MacBook Pro also costs right now $3,499.
Or let's say you want an iPad Pro with 1TB of storage, with the magic keyboard and Apple Pen. It also goes way above 2k.
So yes, the price is hefty. But the opportunities it opens and what it means are enormous.
And it isn’t a consumer product. It’s a b2b product for early adopters.
So for tech bros, it costs a mere “thirty-four, ninety-nine.”
