The things Mr Beast does oppositely than the rest.
The king of Youtube, MrBeast, is the modern-day Walt Disney.
But like every genius, there are things he does in the opposite way as the rest of the world.
Shaan Puri and Sam Parr recently interviewed him.
Here are 4 contrarian things that stood out for me:
š1. āObsess ā burnout" schedule.
MrBeast said that he likes to go as hard as he can until he crashes.
āHe wakes up.
āStarts obsessing over one thing for every second of the day.
āGoes to sleep.
He repeats that until burned out.
š“Then he takes a couple of days off.
This isn't the consistent 9-5 + work-life balance we're used to hearing about.
It's more like the Navalās "work like a lion, not a cow" framework.
Work in sprints until exhaustion.
Based on my experience, I am behind it.
9-5 creative work doesn't work.
š2. Done *isn't* better than perfect
Shaan: āAre you a perfectionistā.
MrBeast āYes, of course.ā
šImagine spending 1.5 million dollars on a video and then not uploading it because you canāt decide on which thumbnail to use.
(true story)
This is the MrBeast perfection level.
Could you imagine writing a blog post and not publishing it because you can't decide which headline is the best?
No.
He has a simple mantra: "I just like to make the greatest Youtube videos possible. If it's not the greatest video, I just won't upload it.ā
What are all the marketers & content people doing?
šMeasuring content by volume & consistency. Not by quality.
"Done is better than perfect" is the norm.
Shipping contentless content for the sake of shipping.
Of course, this could be different, if you have as your north star rule to pump out a volume (like news).
But most of the time, this isn't the case.
Everyone wants quality, they just don't want to put in the work.
š„I would suggest ā make less, make better, distribute more.š„
Create assets.
š3. Comparing yourself to others.
This is considered a bad thing.
Psychologists advise against it.
However, Mr. Beast has on his office wall a timeline of what Steve Jobs and Elon Musk had achieved by a certain age.
+ quotes from them.
Maybe a healthy competition is good?
š4. No proper plan
A MrBeast employee who got a word in the podcast said the worst part of the job is not knowing whatās next.
Thereās no routine. There are no detailed, clear plans.
Everything changes rapidly.
šŖIt's just aggressive action taking towards the goal.
This again isn't the usual - have a detailed plan, prepare for everything, put clear systems in place - common sense advice.
I guess when the north star metric- make the best YT videos - is so clear, navigating in the chaos is much easier.
And creativity is chaotic.
šHere's the TLDR of 4 things MrBeast the opposite way than the rest of the world:
1. āObsess ā burnout" schedule.
2. Done isn't better than perfect.
3. Compares himself to his idols.
4. No proper plans/routines, just doing a lot, changing things a lot.
